A new ITV documentary series, which is set to air next month, will showcase the work of student dentists and professionals working at the University Dental Hospital of Manchester.

The hospital, which is one of the UK’s busiest dental facilities, treats thousands of patients every year and the programme will highlight major oral health issues in the UK, as well as giving the public an insight into the work carried out by staff team. The Dentists will air in the middle of June and will include footage of treatments and procedures, including facial reconstruction.

Dean of the University of Manchester’s School of Dentistry, Professor Paul Coulthard, said that he welcomed the approach from ITV because the programme is an opportunity to show people how dedicated and professional the staff team at the hospital is and give an insight into the diverse clinical work carried out at the facility.

Clinical Head of Division at the dental school, Dr Mike Pemberton, also supported the decision to allow the cameras in and hopes that the public will gain a better understanding of what happens in a dental hospital and how the members of staff work to make patients feel better.

The programme will also highlight important issues surrounding the oral health of the nation, including the rising number of children undergoing hospital treatment due to severe decay, a preventable illness.
