New health watchdog for dentists
As of 1 April 2009, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) replaced the Healthcare Commission as the new health and social care regulator in England.
Dentists may soon have to register with the CQC as well as the General Dental Council. All healthcare and social-care providers will conform to a single set of safety and quality requirements under the new framework, enabling them to register with the regulator.
Registration, which aims to encourage a uniform service standard under the new National Minimum Standards and Regulations, will be introduced from 2010/2011, depending on parliamentary approval.
Chief executive of the CQC, Cynthia Bower, said: “Over the next three years, we will bring a range of services into a single registration system spanning both the health and adult social care system. We want to make sure that both users and providers of services will be heavily involved in shaping and developing the new system.”
