A new dental clinic is set to open in Whyalla, Adelaide, on Friday.

The clinic is part of the University of Adelaide’s School of Dentistry and will be called the Whyalla Oral Health Centre.

The $2.2 million oral health centre will be officially opened by Lyn Breuer, the Speaker of the House of Assembly and Member for Giles.

The centre will have eight dental chairs, as well as excellent teaching facilities and students will be able to access a wealth of learning resources. The clinic will provide first class clinical experience for students of the university, as well enabling local people to access state of the art dental facilities.

Johann de Vries, Dean of the School of Dentistry, said that the new centre was the first of its kind in South Australia. The clinic is owned entirely by the university, but it operates in conjunction with the South Australian Dental Service.

Fifth year students from the university will spend four weeks at the clinic on placement rotations and will also be training with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which provides dental treatment for people living in remote areas.
