A brand new contamination suite has opened, enabling students at the University of Portsmouth to gain valuable experience in sterilisation and infection control.

Students studying dental hygiene and dental therapy will now be able to use the contamination suite to gain practical experience of disposing of waste substances, infection control measures, instrument cleaning and validation of dental equipment.

Dr Sara Holmes, director of the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy, said that the new suite will make a huge difference to the students and enable them to learn about the “practical elements of sterilisation”, an issue, which is very important for students to master.

The suite will not only be used as a resource for students, but also as a facility for working dental nurses and hygienists in the area; local professionals will be invited to use the facility for training purposes and to ensure that they are familiar with updates in techniques and policies.

Dr Holmes said that the contamination suite would play a very important role in dental education at the university; she added that the facility will provide a safe environment for students to learn and train and gain a better understanding and grasp of practical measures, which will be fundamental for their future careers.

John Weld, clinical director, said that the new suite was an excellent addition to the facilities already available at the academy.
