Mountain Ash Hospital Offers Free Dental Care Provided by Students

A hospital in Mountain Ash is offering local patients in the Cynon Valley free dental care. The Dental Teaching Unity at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon is now accepting new patients and offering them the chance to receive dental care without charge. Treatment will be provided by dental students under the supervision of trained professionals.

The system enables local patients to benefit from free dental care whilst providing students with the chance to hone their practical skills and learn on the job. The unity opened at Mountain Ash in 2012 and it has been hugely successful.

Elaine Mahoney is one of many patients who have benefited from the unit. She contacted the hospital after struggling to register with a local NHS dentist for eight months. She has found the unit to be an excellent service and has already recommended it to neighbours. The unit is kitted out with the latest equipment and students and staff members are always polite and eager to help.

The unit is an excellent facility for final year students at Cardiff University, who work under close supervision. They practice their skills and techniques on a regular basis, but they also learn other important skills such as perfecting their chair-side manner and honing their communication skills. Working at the unit prepares students for life at work once they graduate and gives them a valuable insight into day to day life as a qualified dentist.
