Most People Are Scared Of Developing Mouth Cancer

A study carried out for Mouth Cancer Action Month has revealed that most people are more scared of developing mouth cancer than other forms of cancer.

The survey, which was conducted by Denplan, found that two thirds of people are frightened of developing cancer, with more than half admitting that they were more scared of mouth cancer than other types of cancer.

The results of the survey are perhaps expected, as the mouth plays such an important role in the body and the number of cases of mouth cancer is rising year on year, while many forms of cancer are becoming less common.

Despite the fact that people are wary of mouth cancer, three quarters of those surveyed did not believe that were at risk of developing the disease, which is expected to affect more than 60,000 people in the next decade.

The findings show an alarming lack of awareness of the risk factors of oral cancer. The British Dental Health Foundation is attempting to raise awareness of the disease and encourage early detection; without early diagnosis and treatment, around 30,000 people in the UK will die from mouth cancer in the next ten years.

This month, the BDHF, the Mouth Cancer Foundation and dentists all over the UK are encouraging patients to go for regular check-ups and oral screening checks in order to ensure that cases of mouth cancer are diagnosed at an early stage when treatment is much more likely to succeed.
