More than 200 people gathered to bid a fond farewell to a retired dentist from Sherborne on Thursday 26th March.

The funeral service of Joan Miller took place in Sherborne Abbey and was conducted by Canon Eric Woods. Joan was a very popular figure in the community and friends, family members and former colleagues turned out in their droves to pay their final respects.

Joan died on the 9th March at the age of 96 years old. She remained an active member of the community right into her old age and had a large number of friends. She worked as a dentist in the town from 1945 until 1974 and spent her retirement fundraising for charities, getting involved with local organisations and pursuing her hobbies, which included gardening, bee keeping and cooking.

At the age of just 16 years old, Joan enrolled in a dental course at Sheffield University and she later qualified as a dental surgeon. At that time, there were very few female dentists around. Joan worked in paediatric dentistry in Dewsbury and Stafford during the war before relocating to Sherborne.

Joan married fellow dental surgeon Ken Miller in 1940, but sadly, he passed away in a swimming accident in Portugal in 1958. Joan continued to work at the dental practice in Sherborne and she remained there until she decided to retire in 1974. She passed the reigns over to Philippa and Peter Sherwin.

Joan will be missed by many and remembered with very fond memories.
