Mobile Dental Unit Making a Difference to Elderly People

A mobile dental unit is making a difference to elderly people in Worcestershire.

The mobile clinic, which was first launched by NHS Worcestershire in November 2010, is now fully operational. The unit provides a comprehensive range of dental services and treatments and it serves almost 50 care homes across the county.

The mobile unit serves people who would otherwise find it very difficult to access a dentist. According to Nigel Crew, dental commissioning manager at NHS Worcestershire, a significant number of elderly people in the area live in a care home and therefore it is important to provide specialist dental services for these people. The unit is also helping to tackle the problem of the growing ageing population and helping to improve standards of oral health amongst older people.

Dr Imran Wadee, from Gentle Dental Surgery in Worcester, runs the mobile service and has treated more than 250 patients over the course of the last 9 months. Dr Wadee said that regular examinations are extremely important for older people, as they are prone to oral health diseases.

Lizzie Flood, manager of Dunley Hall and Ryans Court care homes in Stourport-on-Severn, said that the clinic provides an essential service for residents of the homes.
