The Mission of Mercy has confirmed plans for a 2-day free dental event in Pensacola, Florida later this month.

The charity, which runs free dental events all over the US in conjunction with state dental associations, will fund the event at Woodham Middle School. On the 24th and 25th March, Pensacola residents will be able to take advantage of free dental treatment provided by hundreds of volunteer dentists, therapists, nurses and hygienists.

The team of volunteers is hoping to treat around two thousand people over the course of the weekend; however, organisers are expecting to turn people away, such is the demand for free dental treatment in the area. At a previous clinic in Jacksonville, 3,000 patients were treated, but a further 5,000 were turned away at the door.

Dr Kim Jernigan, a local dentist, described the demand as “overwhelming” and advised people to arrive early to avoid disappointment. Appointments are allocated on a first come, first served basis, and often, people queue overnight to ensure they get a place.

The clinic will open from 6am until 6pm.
