Millions of Britons are ignoring their dentist’s advice to brush their teeth twice a day, according to a recent survey.

The survey, which was carried out by the British Dental Health Foundation, revealed that seven millions Brits do not brush their teeth twice a day, with 1 in 7 people admitting that they leave it 2 days to clean their teeth. One in five people also admitted that they do not floss on a regular basis.

Showing on this most recent survey, there has been little improvement in standards of oral hygiene since the last one, which was carried out in 2011. Twenty eight per cent of people said that they did not brush their teeth at least once a day in the survey from two years ago and 1 in 7 admitted that they sometimes wait 2 days to brush their teeth.

The survey also revealed that other hygiene habits are slipping; in this year’s survey, more than 7 and a half million people admitted that they do not shower every day and 25 per cent of participants said that they do not always wash their hands after going to the toilet.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said that the most surprising thing about the results is that people are not carrying out the most basic hygiene tasks; he also added that it was alarming that attitudes to oral health are still poor in many cases and a large number of people are neglecting oral hygiene, which increases the risk of oral illnesses, as well as general health problems.

Dr Carter advised people to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, to floss regularly and to see their dentist at least once a year for a routine check-up.
