A dentist from Melton has donated hundreds of pounds to his local hospital after undergoing open heart surgery last year.

Dr Stefan Kaczmarczyk, from High Street Dental Care, wanted to thank the doctors and nurses at Glenfield Hospital for the care he received last year when he had aortic valve replacement surgery. He decided to organise a fundraising event in the form of a charity netball game. The 51 year old was diagnosed with a leaking aortic valve 17 years ago and had surgery in March 2014.

The team from High Street Dental Care took on the Melton Marvels in a charity netball game, which was enjoyed by all. In total, Dr Kaczmarczyk and his team raised £750, which has been presented to the adult intensive care unit at Glenfield Hospital recently.

Dr Kaczmarczyk said that he felt compelled to do something to raise money for the intensive care unit because his experience at the hospital was so positive and the care he received from doctors and nursing staff was “outstanding.” The netball game was a chance to get local people involved and to have some fun, while also supporting a really worthy cause. The High Street Dental Care team played well, but they were beaten on the night by the Marvels, who have recently been crowned champions of the Leicester Netball League.

Dr Kaczmarczyk visited the hospital earlier this week with Becky Graves, captain of the Melton Marvels, to present a cheque to the intensive care unit staff. Matron Jackie Redfearn said that it was excellent to see Stefan looking so well after his treatment last year and thanked everyone involved for their donation, which will be used to purchase new equipment.
