Manchester Professor Achieves International Award For Dentistry Research

The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) awarded Professor Helen Worthington the H Trendley Dean Memorial Award. Professor Worthington, from Manchester University’s School of Dentistry, received the award for evidence-based dentistry research and oral health care.

The Colgate-Palmolive Company supports the award, which is in memory of the National Institute of Health’s first dental officer and 21st President of the IADR. The H Trendley Dean Memorial Award recognises those who make distinguished contributions to research and development in public health, epidemiology and behavioural science.

As a leader in developing evidence-based dentistry, Professor Worthington refines methods of gaining evidence for procedures and treatments in oral health. Her achievements in notable clinical trial interpretation, epidemiological research and systematic review coupled with her contribution to health policy and clinical practice have earned Professor Worthington the award.

Professor Worthington is Statistician for the Cochrane Oral Health Group and is the joint Co-ordinating Editor of the top three international dentistry journals: Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Journal of Dental Research and Cochrane Oral Health Group. The Cochrane Oral Health Group are involved in reviews of all oral health randomised controlled trials. The reviews assess oral health treatment effectiveness so that patients may benefit from safe and health-enhancing dentistry treatment.
