A man, who intervened in an argument to protect a woman, was left with severe injuries after being punched seventeen times.

Mark Graver, who has been labelled ‘the good Samaritan’, intervened when he heard a man shouting at a woman, who was with her 5 year old child at the time; Mr Graver stepped in to protect the woman at the incident at the Premier Express store in Poringland, and was punched numerous times.

Mr Graver, a 40 year old father of two, told 31 year old Daniel Maxwell that he should not be shouting at a woman, especially as she had a young child with her; he tried to calm Maxwell down but was attacked and hit several times. The incident was caught on CCTV and it was later revealed that Maxwell had been drinking and was shouting at the woman because her partner owed him a large sum of money. The incident took place on the 28th September 2012.

Mr Graver was left with extensive facial injuries, bruising and a split lip, which required stitches; he needed £200 worth of dental work and still has a lump in his cheek, which doctors say will take a long time to heal fully.

In court in Norwich, Mr Maxwell, from Potter Heigham, admitted to unlawfully wounding Mr Graver and was jailed for 15 months.

Mr Graver said that he could not say whether he would intervene in an argument again; he said that he would like to believe that he would have the strength to try and sort out a similar situation, but would be wary because of the attack.

The investigating officer, PC Adrian Savory, said that it was good that people like Mr Graver still existed, but advised people to steer clear of potentially volatile situations and to call the police instead.
