Man had no feeling in his teeth after his head was crushed
A man who has no feeling in his teeth, mouth, tongue and lips after his head was crushed has received a £780k pay-out.
Mark Treadwell, of Benfleet, was awarded the compensation because his life was ruined after a lorry crushed his head while he was at work.
The 45-year-old was awarded the settlement by his former employers Schenker Stinnes Logistics.
The multinational logistics firm admitted liability for the tragedy which occurred in March 2006.
A lorry driver had reversed without looking and crushed Mr Treadwell’s head at Southfields industrial estate, Laindon.
He had to be airlifted to Basildon Hospital to receive treatment and was then transferred to the Royal London Hospital. Mr Treadwell spent a long time in intensive care and is now seriously disabled.
Elisabeth Roth, Mr Treadwell’s lawyer, said her client’s life had been transformed due to severe carelessness and slack working practices.
Mr Treadwell had been an active, sporty man but is now predominantly housebound. His accident has left him with poor balance because of double vision and he now has no feeling in his teeth, mouth, tongue and lips.
The accident also left Mr Treadwell with a rare blood blockage in his eye, meaning he is unable to cry. He now has to take drops to stop his eyes from drying out and sleeps with them taped shut.
His wife has to care for him and he cannot work. Mrs Roth said that she hoped the payout would change the couples’ lives for the better.
