Malvern Primary School Children Pay a Visit to the Dentist

Sample News Big

When a group of primary school children from Malvern visited the dentist recently, they got a bit of a surprise. Pupils from St Joseph’s Primary School were treated to a visit from Billy the Beacon Bear, who was happy to take part in the fun and games.

Children from the school paid their local dental practice Beacon Dental a visit as part of their science lessons, and were treated to a day of fun activities and interactive educational talks from the dental team. Children learned all about the anatomy of the teeth and took part in a brushing demonstration with the team’s hygienist, Laura Danby. Children also volunteered to have the camera in their mouths so everybody could see exactly what the inside of the mouth looks like.

Co-owner of the practice, Karen Sutton, said that the school had approached her because the children were learning about the mouth in science and teachers believed the children would gain a better understanding by learning from dentists. The trip was a great success, the children were very well-behaved and they learned a lot.

Beacon Dental Care has been praised for its links with the local community and it runs an outreach programme, which is designed to engage with local people and ensure that the practice is at the heart of the community.

Laura Danby, Beacon’s dental hygienist, said that everybody had lots of fun on the day and the children left with an understanding of how to keep their teeth clean and which foods to try and eat and which ones to avoid if possible. The kids loved meeting Billy the Beacon Bear and they even helped him choose which healthy foods to put in his lunchbox.
