Malaysians still neglecting oral health

The prime minister’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, has revealed that a large proportion of Malaysian people are neglecting their oral health, despite government initiatives to improve education and raise standards of oral hygiene.

Standards of oral health in Malaysia are shockingly low, with 90 percent of adults and 50 percent of children under the age of 12 suffering from cavities.

Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor said that there was a widespread lack of concern for oral health amongst Malaysians and people didn’t seem to care about the implications of poor oral hygiene and subsequent health problems. Although she believes that the government and opposition parties should focus on oral health, she also insists that it is time for people to start taking responsibility for their individual actions.

This year, the 2010 National Oral Health Plan was launched with the aim of setting standards for improved oral health in the future. It is hoped that the initiatives launched as part of this programme will encourage people to take better care of their teeth and gums.
