The team from Lindley Dental Practice is getting behind Mouth Cancer Awareness Month by wearing charity t-shirts and blue lipstick, and offering free mouth cancer screening in November.

The national campaign, which is run by the British Dental Health Foundation, aims to educate people about mouth cancer and encourage as many people as possible to have a screening test. Practices all over the UK are supporting the campaign by providing free checks this month.

The team at Lindley Dental Practice are wearing Mouth Cancer Awareness Month t-shirts and donning blue lips in support of the campaign, and the practice will be offering free checks to registered patients and non-patients. The campaign runs under the slogan, ‘if in doubt, get checked out’. The aim is to save lives by ensuring that as many cases of oral cancer are diagnosed at an early stage as possible.

Principal dentist, Sharon Jardine, said that dentists are in an excellent position and can often identify early warning signs of mouth cancer. When the disease is diagnosed early, the chances of survival are up to 90 per cent. Screening helps to spot changes very early on and this vastly improves the chances of survival.

Screening will be available at the practice from 8.30am until 11.30am on the 19th November.

Mouth cancer currently claims more than 2,000 lives per year in the UK and experts predict that it will continue to become more prevalent in the next decade with the potential to affect more than 30,000 people.
