Leading Cosmetic Dentist Issues Warning Over Illegal Tooth Whitening

One of the UK’s leading cosmetic dentists has issued a warning to the public over illegal tooth whitening treatment.

Dr Ken Harris, from Riveredge Cosmetic Dentistry, which has branches in Sunderland and Newcastle, believes that people are risking their oral health by taking a gamble with illegal tooth whitening treatments and DIY remedies. Dr Harris said that some people are so desperate to get a whiter smile without spending much money that they are using dangerous DIY methods, such as home bleach and scourers, to lighten the shade of their smile.

Dr Harris has also warned the public against going to beauty salons for quick-fix whitening treatments. Bright white teeth have become very popular, thanks to celebrities and stars of the fashion and beauty industries, and many people are tempted by low prices and express treatments, which are available at high street salons and back street parlours and offer cheaper tooth whitening treatment.

According to the General Dental Council, tooth whitening is a dental procedure and must therefore only be offered to the public by fully qualified and trained dentists. Under new legislation, anyone who offers treatment without the necessary qualifications and registration is liable and could face legal action. The GDC has already successfully taken action against a number of illegal tooth whitening providers and is clamping down in a bid to protect the public from harm.

Dr Harris said that tooth whitening is an advance cosmetic procedure, which requires skill. If it is offered by people without the relevant training, there is a risk of complications.
