Laser Scanner to Free Up Time for Orthodontics

A new 3D laser scanner has is being used in a US Orthodontics to produce digitally fabricated splits within minutes, saving orthodontists valuable chair time.

The revolutionary programme scans models with the laser and reproduced a digital image of the teeth using a specially designed software programme in which contact points can be identified and disclusion ramps are defined, the programme then produces a 3D splint.

The Digital splints can be produced in 15 minutes and are produced with great accuracy, allowing for Orthodontics time to be significantly reduced.

One major advantage for Orthodontists is that the process eliminates cusp indexing on the splint, which is virtually impossible through traditional methods; the digital splints allow for the patients teeth to move freely as opposed to locking in a particular position.

Andrew Knowlton, Knowlton & McFall Dentistry, said: “I used to dread delivering bite splints…until I started using Great Lakes digital design bite splints. Now I’m confident that my splints are going to fit well and I spend very little time perfecting the occlusion.”

Chair time is said to be further saved by specific tools designed as part of the programme and will aid the reduction of splint adjustment time, these come in the form of guides that inform the orthodontist about patient screening, splint appliance selection, bite registration and splint adjustment tips and techniques.

The new digital splint technology is already being used in many orthodontics in the US and is allowing for busy Orthodontists to treat larger numbers of patients as the product continues to reduce treatment time.
