Large proportion of adults not paying for NHS dental care
A report published by the NHS Information Centre has suggested that a large proportion of adults are not paying for NHS dental care.
According to the figures, more than half the complex courses of treatment provided by NHS dentists in 2010-2011 were for non-paying adults; these treatments include dental bridges and dentures. Figures for straightforward courses of treatment were much lower; less than a quarter of dental treatments were provided for non-paying adults.
NHS dentistry, unlike most other NHS services, is not free of charge; however, there are certain exceptions, including children and people who receive government benefits. NHS dentistry charges have increased but they are still considerably cheaper than private dental costs.
