Lancashire Teaching Hospitals has become the first trust in the North West to appoint a fellow in special care dentistry.

Stephanie King has been appointed to develop the provision of specialist dental care for adults with disabilities and medical and mental health conditions. Stephanie will be involved in research, which will be used to shape the way dentists are trained and improve the way adults with chronic conditions and disabilities are cared for.

Vanita Brookes, consultant in Special Care Dentistry said that field is relatively new and as such, it is important to carry out new research and identify areas that need improvement to ensure that patients receive the best possible care. Stephanie will provide an important link between the trust, other NHS organisations and the teaching hospitals and her work will benefit staff, students and patients.

Stephanie said that she was very excited about the position and added that she was looking forward to working with different individuals and organisations to make a difference to special care dental provision.

Gela Griffiths has already benefited from the Special Care Dentistry service; her son, Shaun, was referred to the service when he needed a number of fillings. In the past he used to get very anxious about seeing a dentist, but the service has made a huge difference and he now trusts the staff and doesn’t feel nervous or worried when he needs dental treatment.
