A dental team from Pendle, Lancashire, has urged parents to make use of free NHS dental services for children in a bid to prevent them suffering from preventable illnesses, including tooth decay.

The team at Mydentist has warned that parents could be putting their children’s health at risk by avoiding routine dental services, which are available free of charge on the NHS. Practice manager Nicola Brown said that the latest statistics show 30 percent of children didn’t go for a routine check-up between 2012 and 2014, despite recommendations for children to go to the dentist every six months.

A report compiled by the Faculty of Dental Surgery revealed that 250,000 children develop dental decay by the time they reach school-age and this means that decay is the most illness for children in the UK, despite the fact that it is preventable. In 2012-2013 more than £30 million was spent on extraction procedures for children.

Ms Brown said that Mydentist is determined to change the trend in Lancashire and promote good oral health among young people and adults. The practice is urging parents in the local area to take advantage of dental services and to look into treatments such as fluoride varnish, which help to prevent decay.
