Jersey Dentists Criticize Outdated Law

Sample News Big

Dentists in Jersey have criticised an outdated and old-fashioned law that states that dental treatments can only be provided by dentists.

The law, which dates back to 1961, is also making dental treatment more expensive for patients on the island, according to dentists.

Members of the dental profession are calling for a modification to the law, which would enable dental hygienists to carry out basic procedures, which would reduce waiting times and enable patients to access cheaper dental care.

Health officials claim that plans to modify services are currently being drawn up. Any changes must be passed by the states before they come into play.

Dentist Dr John Sproson believes that patients are paying more than those on the mainland because they are unable to see dental hygienists and therapists, and therefore have no choice but to pay for a qualified dentist. Changes to the law, which would bring Jersey in line with the mainland, would enable patients to access more affordable care. On the mainland, hygienists and therapists are able to offer a range of treatments, including tooth whitening and fillings.

Dentists also claim that working on the island is a less attractive prospect for hygienists because they are much more restricted that on the mainland.

Katie Park, a hygienist, trained on the mainland and then returned to Jersey to work. She feels that it is a shame that dental professionals have the necessary training and skills to provide treatments, but are unable to do so because of legislation.
