Residents in the Isle of Wight have been invited to register with the new dental academy in Portsmouth.

The new academy is a state of the art facility, which will provide free care for hundreds of local residents. The academy will be staffed by final year dental and dental hygiene students, who will be supervised by qualified staff.

The University of Portsmouth Dental Academy is set to open next month and staff are keen to encourage people to register with the practice; the practice is open to everyone but staff are keen to target those who do not have a dentist and those who avoid going to the dentist. Care will be provided free of charge by the dental students, making dental care accessible to those who struggle to afford NHS dental treatment.

The new academy will welcome patients from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight; there will be a comprehensive range of general dental treatments on offer and patients should not be worried about the students; they are very close to finishing their degree programmes and will be supervised at all times by professional staff.

Sara Holmes, the academy director, said that the opening of the academy was a great opportunity for local people to benefit from free dental healthcare. She said that the team are working alongside local Primary Care Trusts and local dentists to promote good oral health in the area.
