A new animated film, which uses innovative technology to beam images around a dome theatre, has premiered in Plymouth.

The film, which features Geoffrey the Giant, is one of the first to use immersive vision technology, a form of technology, which projects images around a dome-shape theatre to captivate young audiences. Open Wide and Step Inside was created by specialists from Plymouth and was screened for the first time at the immersive theatre at the Peninsula Dental School at Plymouth University.

The cast features members of staff and students from the university and local children were invited to attend the premiere of the film earlier this week. Children from local schools will be attending screenings of the film in the coming weeks.

The aim of the film is to educate children about the importance of good oral hygiene in a fun and interactive way. The storyline focuses on Geoffrey the Giant, who falls victim to painful toothache as a result of neglecting his teeth cleaning regime and eating too many sweets washed down with fizzy pop. Geoffrey’s friend, Mouse persuades him to go and see his dentist, Daisy, who magically transforms her wand into dental instruments, spots the problem and gives Geoffrey a filling to ease his pain.

The message is clear for parents and children; poor oral hygiene and sugary foods are detrimental for oral health and regular dental sessions are essential. The film also teaches children that dentists aren’t scary and going to the dentist is nothing to be worried about.

Dr Robert Witton, of Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise, said that everyone is really looking forward to Open Wide and Step Inside, especially as alarming statistics on children’s oral health have been released very recently. The film is an enjoyable, informal and exciting way of educating children and hopefully they will go home having been inspired by Geoffrey’s story.
