A man has been fined £500 and ordered to pay costs to the General Dental Council totaling around £1,800 after claiming to be a qualified dentist.

Raja Nadeem Zakir was fined by magistrates in Leeds after claiming that he had the relevant qualifications to call himself a dentist. Mr Zakir admitted to the charge of unlawfully using the title of dentist, which contravenes the Dentists Act of 1984. By law, all dental workers are required to be registered with the General Dental Council in order to practice in the UK.

The court heard that Mr Zakir advertised his services online in March and April last year, claiming to be a dentist. The GDC said that his description of himself as a dentist lead members of the public to believe that he had the relevant dental qualifications and registration documents.

The General Dental Council restricts working in the UK to those who are registered to protect the public and ensure that patients see dentists who have the necessary training and expertise. Representatives from the GDC have informed patients that they can check whether a dentist is registered with the GDC on their website.

Mr Zakir was ordered to pay £500 and a victim surcharge of £50 in addition to legal costs for the GDC, which cost almost £1,800.
