Hundreds Queue For Free Dental Event San Diego

Hundreds of people waited in line for several hours to attend a free dental clinic in San Diego on Saturday and Sunday.

More than 600 volunteer dentists, dental nurses, hygienists and general helpers gave up their weekend to assist at the event, which was organised by the California Dental Association.

People started gathering outside Del Mar Fairground on Friday even though the clinic doors did not open until early Saturday morning.

Russ Webb, an oral surgeon who volunteered at the event, said that the clinic attracted hundreds of people on low incomes who struggle to afford regular care, but do not qualify for state assistance. The clinic enabled hundreds to get the treatment they needed and relieved people from pain caused by dental problems.

Laurie Kilian drove for seven hours to get to the Del Mar Fairgrounds because she cannot afford to see a dentist and this event was a means of getting the treatment she needed. She has avoided smiling for months because she did not want people to think she was ugly, but now, she has had treatment and feels like a new person. She said that the drive was worth it and added that she feels extremely lucky.

Organisers were expecting to treat around 2,000 people over the course of the two-day event.
