Hundreds queue for free dental clinic in Florida

Hundreds of people lined up to try and get an appointment at a free dental clinic in New Port Richey in Florida.

The clinic was held as part of the Dentistry from the Heart programme, which runs free dental clinics across the United States. The clinics are aimed to help people who would otherwise struggle to afford dental treatment. Often patients haven’t seen a dentist in months, even years and many have extensive dental health problems.

The New Port Richey clinic was hosted by local dentist Dr Vincent Monticciolo, who has been participating in the Dentistry from the Heart programme for the last ten years. He said that demand for the clinic had increased significantly over the years, as more and more people have difficulties paying for dental care for their families. Many people have lost their jobs in recent years and as a result, they have also lost insurance benefits.

Dentistry from the Heart is a non-profit organisation, which aims to help people who cannot afford dental treatment; dentists and members of dental staff volunteer their time and services to help people in their local area. Since it was founded, the charity has helped thousands of people and around 8 million dollars of free dental care has been provided to patients.
