Hundreds of people benefited from a free dental event in Baton Rouge on Friday and Saturday 27th and 28th February.

The free clinic, which was held at the Armed Forces Reserve Center, offered an array of treatments, from fillings and extractions to cleaning treatments and root canal therapy.

People started lining up for the event in the small hours, many willing to queue for hours in the cold to secure an appointment. By 9am, organisers had to turn people away, as they had reached capacity, with around 800 patients booked in for treatment.

Thomas Johnson, 29, has had a missing front tooth since he was 11 and the outstanding team at the free clinic have helped to enhance the look of his smile and boost his confidence by replacing the tooth and providing treatment for four decayed teeth. Johnson said that he has struggled with the look of his smile for years, especially when it comes to going to job interviews, and said that he couldn’t thank the volunteer dentists enough for the treatment he received at the weekend.

The centre was converted into a make-shift dental clinic for the weekend with hundreds of volunteers on hand and the latest dental equipment at the ready. Outside, the Joel Jones 3M choir entertained people who were waiting in line, offering their time and talent free of charge.

The event was run by the charitable section of the Louisiana Dental Association.

In total, around 1,600 people were treated over the weekend.
