Henley dentist hangs up his drill to focus on his passion for rowing

A dentist from Henley has hung up his drill to focus on his passion for rowing. Paul Stuart-Bennett has spent the last 27 years treating the patients of Henley and now he is looking forward to spending more time on the water.

The 64-year old dentist, who lives with his wife, Louise, is a long-standing member of the Leander Club and the Upper Thames Rowing Club. Paul has always been a fan of the sport, and was club captain at Upper Thames at one time. Just last year, he competed at the Henley Masters’ Regatta, claiming a gold medal in the coxless fours event. He also took part in races at the Veteran Four Head of the River competition. He was also part of a second-placed mixed eight team, which included Olympic gold medallist Dame Katherine Grainger, at the Head of the Charles River event in Boston last year.

Paul’s passion for rowing grew when he rowed for the University of London while studying dentistry at Guy’s Hospital. In 1982, Paul and his wife, a midwife, relocated from Edinburgh to Henley and Paul started work at a practice in nearby Reading. Eight years later, he decided to become a partner at Courtrai House after bumping into the owner, Richard Parham, with whom he had trained at Guy’s. Paul joined Richard and fellow partner, Nick Coleman and the trio worked together until Mr Parham retired seven years ago. Shortly afterwards, Mr Coleman started his retirement, and now, it is time for Paul to hang up his drill and take life a little easier. As well as focusing on how rowing, he also plans
