Health experts issue warning over sugar content of children’s yoghurts

Health experts have advised parents to check the sugar content of yoghurts, after analysis revealed that some popular products contain up to 5 cubes of sugar per serving.

Research conducted by Public Health Liverpool found that some yoghurts contain the equivalent of the recommended daily intake of sugar for a child aged under 6. NHS guidelines suggest that children aged between 4 and 6 years old shouldn’t consume more than 5 cubes of sugar per day, while older children shouldn’t exceed a daily limit of 6 cubes. This relates to ‘free sugar’, which is sugar that is not naturally found in products, for example, the sugars present in fresh fruit.

Analysis conducted by Public Health Liverpool revealed that many leading branded products contain almost 5 cubes of sugar. Products such as Muller corners and Nestle Smarties were among the worst offenders, while best-selling yoghurts for babies and toddlers, Petit Filous, were found to contain more than 2 cubes of sugar per serving.

Public Health Liverpool is on a mission to educate parents about sugar consumption and the body has launched a campaign to raise awareness of healthy eating. Members of the organisation will also be working with local health professionals to stage a roadshow tour across the city in the coming months.
