Havana dentists successfully use stem cells to treat patients with periodontal disease

Dentists in Havana, Cuba, have not only recently succeeded in meeting the goal two years ahead of the deadline set by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to improve the state of children’s oral cavity health, but have also announced success in use of stem cells to treat patients with periodontal disease this past week at the Havana International Convention of Stomatology 2010.The Convention theme covered comprehensive dental care and the challenge of global aging.

The Cuban government have aim to lower percentages of Cuban residents with oral diseases, such as dental caries, gingivitis, periodontitis, and oral cancer by 2015. Part of their strategy is targeted at early detection and diagnosis of oral diseases by increasing dental provision throughout Cuba to reduce cases of dental caries by 40 percent and those with gingivitis and periodontal disease by 15 percent.

Preliminary findings from studies conducted by researchers at the William Soler Paediatric Hospital in close collaboration with the Institute of Haematology and Immunology reveals successful use of stem cells to treat patients with periodontal disease. Twenty one patients with periodontal disease received stem cell therapy, removing clinical signs of gingival inflammation seven days after the treatment. Dr. Amparo Perez Borrego, The Enrique Cabrera Faculty of Medical Sciences Head of Dental Teaching Department said, “The first ten who have already completed two years into therapy, have maintained a positive trend and there have been no secondary adverse signs to the treatment.”
