Hartlepool Salon Employee Pleads Guilty to Providing Illegal Teeth Whitening

An employee of a tanning and beauty salon in Hartlepool has admitted to providing illegal tooth whitening treatment.

Graeme Pattinson, who worked for Ultimate Tanning and Beauty, pleaded guilty to a General Dental Council charge of offering illegal tooth whitening at Teesside Magistrate’s Court. Mr Pattinson admitted offering treatment despite the fact that he has no formal dental qualifications.

The General Dental Council has clamped down on illegal tooth whitening since a change in EU legislation, which states that treatment should not be provided by trained, registered dentists. Whitening involves the use of strong bleaching agents, which should only be administered by people who have the relevant training to ensure safe and effective treatment. There is a risk of irritation, burning in the gums and sensitivity and therefore, patients should be seen by dentists only. Anyone who is offering tooth whitening treatment without GDC registration is liable to prosecution and there have now been a number of successful prosecution cases.

Mr Pattinson was given a two year conditional discharge and ordered to pay £1,000 towards GDC legal costs and a £15 victim surcharge fee.
