Hampshire Dentist Prepares For Africa Mission

Sample News Big

A dentist from Hampshire is preparing for a charity mission in East Africa.

Dr Peter Saund, from Eastleigh, will visit Kibera, Africa’s biggest slum town located close to Nairobi. The aim of his trip is to educate and train a doctor to carry out basic dental treatment.

He will also be working with a team of dentists, nurses, midwives and support workers to provide an outreach service for local people.

The dentist described the situation in Kibera as “dire” and said that locals live in conditions, which would be completely unbelievable to many of us living in the UK.

Doctors and dentists are few and far between with the vast majority of people not having any access to routine healthcare. Many families have to travel for hours in order to receive the treatment they need.

Dr Saund said that he wanted to do something to help and came across the charity, Wings of Mercy when doing some research into charity health projects. The father of two is now working hard to raise funds to buy medical equipment in preparation for his trip, which takes place in October.

Finally, Dr Saund stated that his family, friends and patients have all been very generous and supportive and that he is looking forward to the trip.
