A dentist from Grantham has braved the shave to raise awareness of mouth cancer and generate funds for Mouth Cancer Action Month.

Matt Bell and his team from The Maltings Dental Practice have been participating in a month-long fundraising effort as part of Mouth Cancer Action Month, and the brave dentist decided to finish in style by having his head shaved. Over the course of the last month, the dental team has hosted free screening events, run competitions for children and sported blue lips to promote the campaign, which is run by the Oral Health Foundation. Matt has been collecting donations for the shave since the beginning of November, and has raised almost £250.

Matt set out with a target of £200 and his quest to raise donations soon attracted attention from patients and colleagues. He knew he wanted to do something to raise awareness of mouth cancer, but didn’t want to volunteer to jump out of a plane or run a marathon. He decided to shave his head, and his colleagues jumped at the chance of lending a hand.

The practice supports Mouth Cancer Action Month every year, and the team wanted to do something a little different to get people talking about mouth cancer and to encourage them to donate to a great cause. Mouth cancer is becoming more common in the UK, but many people are still unaware of the risk factors, causes and symptoms. Mouth Cancer Action Month aims to educate people about the signs they should be looking out for in a bid to reduce the number of deadly cases.
