A dental team from Grantham has raised more than £200 by taking part in a charity spinathon in support of Mouth Cancer Action Month.

The team from Maltings Dental Practice kept two bikes going for 12 hours straight on Tuesday 21st November to raise money for mouth cancer charities. Two exercise bikes arrived in reception last week and dentists, hygienists, nurses and the reception staff took it in turns to spin for donations. November is Mouth Cancer Action Month and the team wanted to do something fun to help raise awareness of oral cancer and encourage patients to get involved in the campaign.

Louise Butler, practice manager, said that the spinathon was a “great team effort” and all members of staff did their bit to contribute to the cause. Patients have been donating over the course of the past few weeks and in total, the practice has raised over £200.

The practice supports Mouth Cancer Action Month on an annual basis, but this year, everyone thought it would be good to try something a little different to raise money. The team powered the bikes, which were loaned from AUK, from 8am until 8pm with staff pedalling for 30 minutes before swapping with the next team member.

The practice also offered free oral screening throughout November. Mouth Cancer Action Month is run by the Oral Health Foundation and practices all over the country take part in fundraising efforts and screening programmes to try and raise awareness of mouth cancer and encourage patients to look out for potential symptoms and warning signs.
