A pair of dental workers who set up a programme to improve posture among dental professionals have given their colleagues a lesson in a bid to reduce common ailments such as back pain.

Hayley Drury and Kath Eastwood established ‘team4hands4you’ earlier this year with the aims of educating dental professionals about the impact of poor posture and encouraging more people to learn how to sit and stand in the right way. Kath and Hayley have worked together for over 14 years and they are well aware of the prevalence of muscular injuries and chronic pain in the profession.

Clinical lead at the Maltings Dental Practice, Hayley, explained that musculoskeletal problems are very common among dentists and nurse due to the fact that the job involves long periods of standing and sitting, with dentists often reaching forward to gain the best view of their patient’s mouth. Back, shoulder and neck pain can affect people’s ability to focus and work to the best of their ability, but it can also increase the risk of them having time off sick.

To combat pain, Hayley and Kath, a dentist at the practice, set up a scheme, which is designed to encourage better posture and reduce the risk of discomfort. Recently, the dental duo invited their colleagues to take part in interactive sessions, which included stretching demonstrations and yoga exercises. The pair is hoping that the programme will not only fight pain in the workplace, but also strengthen team resolve and spirit.
