A delighted grandfather from Ramsbottom has something to beam about after overcoming his dental phobia.

Mr David Rigby, 68, had bad experiences at the dentist as a child and this triggered a lifelong fear of dentists. He would only ever visit one when he needed to have a tooth removed.

After deciding to have dentures fitted, Mr Rigby was referred to the Bury Dental Access Centre, which is provided by the Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust.

He attended an emergency appointment at the centre’s daily clinic and was offered a treatment course to improve his dental health.

Mr Rigby also saw a hygienist who helped him with oral healthcare techniques to make his gums healthier.

The retired night manager and caretaker said he received ‘phenomenal’ treatment from the service. The dentist he visited found he needed to have wisdom teeth removed and it was necessary to cut into his mouth to take out a broken tooth.

This idea was scary to Mr Rigby, but he received pain relief and talked him through the whole procedure. He said the staff were very patient with him and it gave him the boost he needed to have his teeth treated.
