Gold Coast dentist warns parents over increased incidence of dental injuries over the festive period

A dentist from the Gold Coast has issued a warning to parents in the run-up to the festive period. With children set to break up from school in the coming days, dentists are warning parents that there is an increased incidence of dental injuries at this time of year.

Dr Michael Chong, from the Paediatric Dental Practice, said that children are more likely to be involved in accidents over the Christmas period due to warm temperatures and time off school making pursuits like playing around with inflatables in swimming pools, riding a bike, using a scooter and trampolining more popular.

Dr Chong said that Christmas is a time when many families get together and although it’s fun to get the floats out and get in the pool, there is a real danger of dental injuries. It’s very easy to slip and fall when you’ve been in the pool and many children are sustaining injuries when they fall off giant floats and knock their teeth on the side of the pool. Other popular activities like trampolining and cycling can also put kids at risk.

Dr Chong said that it’s brilliant for young children to be active and to have lots of fun over the festive period, but encouraged parents to be cautious and to encourage children to adopt safety measures when possible.
