A new survey has suggested that the people of Manchester find going to the dentist more stressful than divorce.

The survey, which was conducted by Toothpick, asked people to order scenarios in relation to how much stress they caused. The choices include going to the dentist, having issues with the in-laws, getting divorced, having a job interview and moving house. Staggeringly, more people voted for going to the dentist than getting divorced, with 14.2 per cent of people ticking this box as the most stress-inducing situation they could face.

Sandeep Senghara, founder of Toothpick, said that the results of the survey show that odontophobia, a fear of the dentist, is a real problem in Manchester and many patients are still wary of having dental treatment, despite advances in technology and the introduction of painless treatment techniques. Figures in Manchester reflect a national trend, and it’s clear to see that people in the UK have a profound fear of going to the dentist.

Dental phobia can be caused by many factors, from fears of the dental drill, injections and needles, to negative experiences in the past. Erica Hardy, a social worker who lives in Hull, said that she dreads going to the dentist because she suffered awful symptoms following tooth extraction. She used to be fine going to the dentist, but since she had her tooth removed, she feels sick and has dreadful anxiety in the run-up to her appointments. Erica’s story is shared by many and Manchester’s dentists are doing all they can to help people overcome their fears and feel more comfortable in the dental chair.
