From Pulling Teeth to Patrolling the Streets for Derby Dentist

Sample News Big

A dentist from Derby is combining pulling teeth out with patrolling the streets, spending his time working in dentistry and holding down a position in the Special Constabulary.

Gurdeep Ruhal spends one day a week working in general dental practice, three days a week tending to specialist extraction cases and several hours working as a volunteer for the Special Constabulary. This voluntary role is designed to support the police, reduce crime and promote community cohesion.

Gurdeep, who has been volunteering since 2009, said that joining the force was “hugely rewarding” and it presents an interesting contrast to a day job spent helping people in a different way. No two days on the job are the same and the position really gives you an opportunity to give back to the community.

Gurdeep also said that the role offers the chance to meet new friends and get involved in community matters.

Derbyshire Police have recently launched a recruitment drive to take on new special officers. This is the first time the forces has advertised these roles in four years. Officers receive training and then go out on the beat. Special constables work with full-time regular police officers and have certain police powers.
