An aspiring dentist has plenty to smile about after clinching the prestigious title of Miss Universe.

Iris Mittenaere, from Paris, was crowned Miss Universe after beating off tough competition in Manila.

The French beauty beat 85 competitors to take the crown in the Philippines on Monday 30th January. Her victory marks the first time a European participant has claimed the title in more than a decade. The 24-year old, who is currently studying to become a dentist, said she was incredibly surprised to hear her name called out.

Iris was keen to use her career dreams to shape her campaign, and she stressed that she wanted to promote good oral health around the world if she won. She now wants to use the title to help others. She’s keen to get out there, meet people, and use her skills to help or benefit them in some way.

Speaking at a press conference after the event, Iris said that every girl dreamed of being Miss Universe, but emphasised that she wants to take the mantle and use it to the best of her ability. She wants to be an advocate for dental health, and she wants to take every advantage of travelling and meeting people on a regular basis.

Racquel Pelissier, from Haiti, and Colombia’s Andrea Tovar, were crowned first and second runners-up.
