Free oral cancer screening sessions will be available for dental patients in Brackley, Buckinghamshire.

The sessions will be held every Wednesday afternoon in November at the Orchid Dental Centre on Bridge Street. Free screening will be available as part of the national Mouth Cancer Month campaign, which is running throughout November.

Mouth Cancer Month is run by the British Dental Health Foundation and aims to raise awareness of oral cancer, a form of cancer that kills more people than cervical and testicular cancer combined. Despite the fact that 30,000 will die from mouth cancer over the next ten years, awareness of the disease is still low and dentists are eager to raise the profile and encourage people to look out for the signs and symptoms of oral cancer.

Brackley dentist, Dr Martin Attariani, said that dental professionals play a very important role in the detection of oral cancer and attending regular dental check-ups, will allow dentists to look out for any early signs. Early detection is extremely important, as survival rates could increases by up to 90% if the disease is diagnosed and treated early.

Signs to look out for include red or white patches in the mouth, unusual swellings in the mouth or throat and sores that take a long time to heal. If you have any of these symptoms visit your dentist at once for an examination.
