Free health clinic finishes in LA

The seven day super-clinic at the Los Angeles Sports Arena has finished, after seven long days of health and dental treatments.

The clinic, which was run by Remote Area Medical, ran for seven days and treated around 6,600 patients; the clinic treated around 300 more patients than last year. During the course of the week, patients flocked in their thousands to see volunteer dentists, nurses and doctors. Patients at the clinic received eye examinations, ophthalmic care, dental treatments, health check-ups and arrange of medical treatments.

The huge team of volunteers, which included around 300 trained professionals managed to treat over six thousand patients; however, many more were sent away and there are still thousands of people across the country who are struggling to afford eye, dental and health care.

The number of people that turned out to queue for the clinic in Los Angeles exemplifies the problem of affordable health and dental care in America; thousands of people queued overnight on the eve of the start of the clinic in order to guarantee an appointment and this is just the tip of the iceberg. In other states and cities, the problem is the same; families with a low income, those without insurance and vulnerable people are struggling to afford the care they desperately need and millions of people are going without treatment.

Remote Area Medical will continue to run free health and dental clinics and has plans to travel to Guyana and Haiti in the near future. The next clinic will take place in Harrogate, Tennessee in tow weeks time.
