Free Dental Event Provides Relief for the Uninsured in Sacramento

Hundreds of people queued in the heat to get an appointment at a free dental clinic in Sacramento at the weekend.

Crowds started to gather well in advance of the doors opening at the Cal Expo on Friday 27th March. Many waited for hours, but morale was high and most agreed that the wait was worthwhile in order to get free dental treatment.

This was the first free dental event in Sacramento since 2012 and people travelled from far and wide to see a volunteer dentist. The clinic was run by CDA Cares and was part of a programme that guarantees two free clinics a year.

Hundreds of skilled dental workers offered their time and expertise over the course of the weekend and organisers believe that more than 2,000 people benefited from the clinic on Friday and Saturday. Teams worked long hours to see as many people as possible on both days.

The clinics jump from town to town to try and make sure that the CDA Cares programme reaches as many people as possible. Dentists claim that the aim of the free events is to target those let down by a broken system that makes it very difficult for many people to afford routine care and regular dental appointments.

Many of the people who line up for free clinics all over the USA have not seen a dentist for several years and most suffer with dental pain, as well as problems such as decayed and missing teeth.
