Dentists are urging patients to floss daily to keep lung conditions at bay.

Good oral health has been linked to good general health but an increasing number of studies are now linking poor oral health to an increased risk of a host of serious medical issues, including heart disease, strokes and lung conditions such as pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Figures show that oral health conditions are amongst the most common health conditions; half of adults have gingivitis and 1 in 12 adults have periodontitis. Gum conditions have been associated with a number of life-threatening illnesses because harmful bacteria can get into the bloodstream and cause inflammation; inflammation can obstruct blood flow, which prevents oxygen from travelling to the brain and this can result in a heart attack or stroke.

Once bacteria has entered the bloodstream, it can also start to multiply and the lungs provide a perfect breeding grounds due to the moist, warm conditions; as a result of this, gum disease can contribute to conditions including pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Brushing twice a day is an effective way to remove bacteria and plaque from the mouth but it can be difficult to reach the corners of the mouth with a brush and plaque may develop along the gum line; flossing will help to tackle hard to reach areas, which will reduce the risk of oral health problems including decay and gum disease.
