Finnish Dental Association Issues Warning Over Alcohol Abuse

Sample News Big

The Finnish Dental Association has issued a warning over the dangers of drinking alcohol on a regular basis.

According to research carried out by the National Institute for Health and Welfare revealed that between 400,000 and 600,000 people in Finland drink too much alcohol. Alcohol and smoking are the major risk factors for oral cancer, a form of cancer than is becoming increasingly prevalent and kills more people than cervical cancer and Hodgkin’s disease.

Dentists warned the public about the dangers of drinking ahead of the Finnish Dental Congress, which begins today in Helsinki. Alcohol allows more tobacco to be absorbed into bodily systems, which increases the risk of oral cancer. People who smoke and drink have a considerably higher risk of developing the disease than non-smokers who drink very occasionally.

In light of the connection between alcohol consumption and mouth cancer, the Finnish Dental Association has advised people to be vigilant about the amount they drink and to stick to the recommended daily intake.
