Fears over Job Losses at Dental Firm

Workers at the Peri-dent factory in Tweedbank, Scotland are facing job losses after company executives announced that they were considering moving production to Malaysia.

Peri-dent is one of Europe’s leading dental floss manufacturers and the factory at Galashiels, near Tweedbank, currently employs 132 people. A spokesman from the company said that the firm had been making a loss for some time now and the forecast for the future of the site was not bright and as a result of this, company chiefs were considering moving production to Malaysia, as production costs would be much lower.

Workers at the factory are almost sure that the decision to move has already been made. Some of the workers would keep their jobs, as the current site would be converted into a warehouse with a commercial office and a product development centre, however, the majority of the workforce would lose their jobs.

A spokesman said that the decision was being considered with deep regret, as the company does not want to move but executives fear that there is no other alternative.
