Fear of dentist is learnt from parents
A new study is suggesting that a child’s fear of the dentist originates from what they have learnt from their parents.
The report argues that kids are not naturally scared of receiving dental treatment but develop a negative attitude towards it because of what they have learnt at home.
Dentists are now suggesting that parents should encourage their children to visit the dentist when the child is feeling chirpy to make the experience a happy procedure.
It is also being recommended that parents should pleasantly explain what a dentists role is – to keep teeth healthy and attractive.
Paedodontists, and general dental practioners should always attempt to make a kid’s first visit a good experience. Many dentists like to give their young patients a tour of the clinic or make the first visit a simple visual examination. This depends on the kind of treatment needed.
Some dentists just clean the teeth or take x-rays to interest the child. Children are usually pleased to find out that this makes their teeth bright and shiny and a simple happy first appointment can emphasise a positive brushing routine for the rest of a person’s life.
