Usually, dentists tell you to avoid sweet treats, but the team from Durham City Smiles has been encouraging patients and local people to buy cakes in support of a local hospice.

Durham City Smiles was one of a number of local businesses participating in St Cuthbert’s Hospice Corporate Accumulator Challenge. The aim of the competition was to take a £50 stake and make as much money as possible for it.

The team organised a bake sale and a raffle and converted the initial £50 investment into a whopping £688. Trainee dental nurse Emma Thompson, who was in charge of the Crossgates clinic’s effort, said that everyone got on board and the team is delighted to be crowned the winner. She said the competition was a great success and it was fun to be part of it. She added that it was hugely rewarding to raise so much money for such a worthy cause.

Becky Fiswick from St Cuthbert’s Hospice thanked everyone for supporting the challenge and congratulated the dental team on their success. The hospice is now hoping to build on the success of the first competition and make it bigger and better next time.
